The rules that affect the ways in which companies operate have been completely overhauled by the Companies Act 2006. Its provisions have come into effect gradually over the last three years, with the last bunch in force from 1 October 2009.

Among the important practical changes is the shortening of the deadline for filing accounts from 10 months to 9 months, combined with an increase in the penalties for failing to do so - the maximum is now £1,500. Also, if documents are rejected on a technicality, they used to give you 14 days to correct and resubmit them - that's gone.

It's important to be aware of the new deadlines and the new requirements, and to make sure that you stick to them - Companies House is expected to apply the rules strictly.
